In an alternate history, Prohibition didn't ban alcohol, it banned magic. Jefferson Carter is a private investigator with a license to practice while dealing with supernatural cases the coppers can't handle. This is the first in a series of detective novels by John Wick.

The cover was kept bold and iconic, to make it easier to adapt the design for future sequels. The mystical circles reference the subtle magical styles practiced by Carter. The text around the circles are snippets from T.S. Elliot's "The Lady of Shallot" which is heavily referenced throughout the novel. The gun silhouette depicts the "runegun," Carter's signature weapon. The overall cover design is inspired by old cinematic serials from the 1920s.
